I don’t understand… This was all originally written in 2000/2001? And you STILL haven’t finished it?! You can’t do this, man. I don’t care if this thing ends depressingly or with sweet justice or with whatever, but you gotta end it man!
JY: AIEEEE! Don’t hit me again, Ike! I’ll deliver! Clarissa’s next story will be in PEEK, to be published in less than a month!
Exploiting the sad storyline of a girl who reflects the experiences of many people in order to further the sales and forced “popularity” of your lesser work is disgusting. I’ll definitely be here to buy a solo Clarissa comic set, in print or digitally, but so far you’re no better than the all too familiar monster that is her father.
JY: Believe me, nothing I have done in my career has furthered my sales.

I’m commenting in 03/21/16, three months after you said you’ll do a next chapter!!! How long can be this peek??? I met this comic a month ago, and I’m always thinking about it, can’t get over it. You REALLY HAVE TO CONTINUE THIS! Or just give it a conclusion, but stop ignoring it, please! You have a responsability cuz I never saw so many people so disturbed because of a comic. And it is more than 17 years old… Come on, you can’t say you’re “too busy” to conclue this. Pleeeeeeease, make this you’re job priority, NOW! We need it. This is amazing, a lot of people would love to have the talent you do to end this up, you shouldn’t despise it so much! It’s an important tema, give value!!!!!!!
JY: (sniff)… Why won’t anyone listen to me? THE WHOLE STORY IS IN PEEK!! Yes, I will post it here eventually… but not until it has had it’s moment of glory in print!
(AND Yo really ought to buy it! The letterpress cover came out really nice, plus there’s lots of other good stuff in it. But I will not beg!)
So, is there like a support group I can join now that I’ve read Clarissa? I found some old reddit threads that are closed, and I’m not going to tell anyone I know to go read this great comic about a girl who is raped by her dad because, I mean, look at the reaction you get from some people, just for drawing this comic (comparing you to her dad, wtf? yeah, let’s keep the reality of child abuse in the dark, because that’s worked out great for society so far? Oh, it hasn’t?). The proof of how important this comic is, is in the fact that psychologists who deal with sexual abuse survivors, and the survivors themselves, find something cathartic and therapeutic about reading this. Because it’s the real story. This is what most child sex abuse actually looks like, a normal family on the outside, and a child who hates herself and is ostracized for being a victim because nobody wants to think about something so horrifying. And everyone blames HER. For COMPLAINING about it. For getting SICK from it. You give her agency, she’s witty and clever and talented, and she’s strong. I ordered BOTH versions of PEEK, since it’s going to be a collector’s item one day, and I have to know how the story ends. Will her teacher realize the wolf is her dad, and Mimi the Chipmunk, “It’s Me. Me. Get it?”:( Ahhh I’m crying again. I honestly think if the world read more of this comic, there would be fewer Clarissa’s in the world. There would be more teachers with alarm bells going off in their heads when they see art depicting sexual themes from first graders instead of thinking that is a nasty little child. There would be more teachers paying attention to the kids who are always depressed, who always hang their head down and walk alone on the playground. Child sex abuse thrives in secrecy. It needs to be a very public topic. This comic presents the greatest level of awareness of it that I have ever read, anywhere. The multiple layers of meaning everywhere, the bath scene which drives home with such devastating force the feeling of a child not ever feeling safe in her own home. Her inability to receive comfort from even a stuffed friend that can’t hurt her, because she can’t imagine anyone or anything ever accepting her. The behavior of the middle child breaks my heart. Honestly, seriously, I feel like there should be a support group just for people who have read Clarissa and just can’t ever really wrap their heads around it, like infinite jest or something. My mind is just completely fucked. Thanks, though!
(Sorry for the stream of consciousness or any typos, it’s hard to edit this, because I’m lazy.)
Why in the name of Heaven have you not been offered a contract by DC, Marvel, Viz or any other major comic/graphic novel/manga publisher is one of the greater mysteries in the universe.
I have no real comment other than I respect and admire your work and wish you all the best. Thanks for all this.
JY: Thank you, John. As to why I am not more famouser… to paraphrase holy Xerxes, “they fear my divine power.”
Hi. I found out about “Clarissa” through an account on the app iFunny. It was screen shots of the stuffed friend chapter. (He gave credit and cited it.) I decided to look into it to see if it was more than a standalone comic, and I have to say, this is some deep dark stuff. But it’s phenomenal. I do t usually use that word because I don’t want to come off as pretentious, but the story is depressing but enlightening in a way. I didn’t know it was like that. Those that get angry for you shining light on this issue are simply behind the times and too afraid to appreciate that this gives non-abuse survivors like myself some perspective or understanding. So… Nice work.
Believe it or not, my therapist told me to read this series…so I bought all of your online comics and Peek!. It’s helpful to be able to flip over to Beepo and Roadkill to balance out the serious stuff here.
JY: I won’t believe it! My work has never done any good for anyone (least of all me!)
Jesus Henry Christ….. It has been a long LONG time since my days began of strolling ’round the internet that something could actually give me pause. Just, wow. I think the Stuffed Friend chapter especially will be stuck with me for quite a while. Fuck man, after reading the whole Clarissa section I have written and rewritten this comment trying to think of something as starkly poignant as what you created…….. fuck.
Your Clarissa comics are absolutely amazing. I love how blunt and clever the writing is, how you breathe life into Clarissa as a character in such a way that what she goes through feels real and relatable and not just there for shock value only. I sincerely hope you plan on finishing the series someday, that would be awesome. You rock.
JY: Thank you, Boop. The demands for more Clarissa are coming in daily. I may have to make some new plans for 2018!
SOOO, what you keep saying to these clowns^, is true? that you already have the full comic but needs to be bought? damn could someone give it to me for free? lmao
JY: That’s right, Captain Stingy! Gimmee your dough!!
As soon as I get my next paycheck I will be buying more of Clarissa. Her story means so much to me, and despite any naysayers, I think you do very well taking such a serious topic and going with a realistic approach with it.
Keep up the great work, her story is a lot more appreciated than you think.
Thanks for answering peoples messages.
Clarissa has been a really important comic to me, having been sexually abused multiple times in my life. It offers me a way to cope and move on. I’m glad to see you’ve been thinking of future comics.
Hope to see more soon, thank you for your time.
“Louche”, holy God, sharp as a tack that boy.
Poe or no? Frightening to think that he may actually serious; worse, that there may a sizable percentage of the US population who are equally insightful. (Though that would help explain certain of this country’s political choices c.1980 forward.)
Honestly, this is something everyone should read.
Ignore every one who has no idea what the life of Clarissa is like. It’s spot on and absolutely devastating.
I need every Clarissa comic created compiled into its own book. I was just introduced to this series today, and I can’t stop thinking about it. Are there any plans for this in the foreseeable future?
JY: YES! If you want to be in on the loop for Clarissa’s next project, please join the Clarissa mailing list by sending me a message at clarissa (at) whatisdeepfried.com, and make “SUBSCRIBE” your subject line.
Are you working on clarissa still? Will there be a new comic about her story?
JY: YES! There is more to come. Join the Clarissa mailing list to be the first to know when her next story will drop.
Why dont you set up a patreon and advertise on twitter and other social media? I see people make thousands off of webcomics due to proper advertising and management. 2020 is seeing the return of edgy media and clarissa is very marketable online. The most important thing is to create a new comic each week, provide sketches to patrons, etc. If you’re removed from patreon there’s other sites you can use. Ko-fi, steemit, librapay. If stonetoss can post on twitter, I’m 99% sure you can as well. instagram is also good as well, as well as 4chan.
JY: Thanks for the input, Zirk! I actually am already offering a subscription service based on all those suggestions right now!
And anyone wishing to learn about upcoming Clarissa content can do so by contacting me at clarissa-AT-whatisdeepfried.com and joining the mailing list!
(Which reminds me… I need to post a Clarissa update!)
I just do not get why the hell people are asking why you derive pleasure from writing a story like Clarissa’s?! Are they fucking MENTAL?! So not speaking about things like this solve the issue? Hiding sexual abuse stops it? Fuck offfff!! This shit happens everyday and I’m 100% sure these comics have helped people, like myself! Instead of attacking the artist for depicting real life things that happen to girls and boys everywhere, attack the PREDATORS!
Love your stuff xxx
Hey so I’m about to order all the PEEK comics, but first want to make sure that all of Clarissa is in there. Does it include the beginning of the story as well?
JY: Clarissa’s stories are actually spread out in many different comics. Peek #1 contains the complete “Take Me to Work Day” story, but the first Clarissa stories are in The Great Taste of Deep Fried and Deep Fried volume 2 #1 and #2. (All available here)
I came here because someone on Quora recommended Clarissa to me. Your cartoons are horrific – and brilliant. Not only are they fantastically well drawn, but you really show an abused child’s experience from the inside. The “bath time” cartoon really hit home for me. The stuffed bunny one wrenches at the soul.
Thank you for your work. I wish you every success.
JY: Thanks Alpha!
Hey, is that comic written out of your imagination or did you speak with someone about there experience?
It seems extremely real, when i compare it to stories i heard or my own experiences with mental health stuff.
I, too, saw that Ask Reddit thread on August 22nd and found my way to Clarissa.
Brilliant series. We witness her trauma development in real time, her pain, her crushing loneliness, all from her voice. Her family blames her, her teachers look away, her peers shun her, even her stuffed animals abandon her.
But readers of her story haven’t abandoned her. We are still with her. This isn’t voyeurism, this is empathy.
I found this comic due to reddit, and I personally have not read a lot of comics but sped my way through this. Your work is impressive, and I appreciate seeing this type of trauma explored through the eyes of the victim rather than from an outsider’s view as it often is . Seeing how much time you’ve put into the comic and other work is amazing. (I’m making my way through the rest of this website now haha).
Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you and also ask… what color is Clarissa‘a hair? TV tropes says it was originally blonde, but colored work I can find (the fundraiser video) has her hair red. I ask because I want to make fan art of her in her forcefield (if that is okay).
Thank you
JY: Fan art is always welcome. Clarissa’s hair is sort of strawberry blonde, but usually looks more red than blonde in the art where I have colored it.
Remembered this comic the other day and then looked this site up again. I just have to ask, does the father eventually get punished for what he’s done? I remember reading this back in the day and then becoming so fucking mad that everyone else was just obilivous to what a monster he was. Hell, I’d settle for a comic panel where he gets punched in the face, even if the person was punching him over something else.
Hi, I just… Wow. So I just found out this comic, really the whole series, and I’m working on ordering Peek. Its just so good, so horrifying, but so real. This is the most accurate representation I have seen so far of society’s reaction to sexual abuse of children. ESPECIALLY the line of her mother saying ‘you being a tease’, blaming the victim for the abuser noticing them. I admit… I’m crying right now. My heart breaks from how many Clarissa’s there are in the world, and how many turn a blind eye. Thank you so much for all of this. I would like to make fanart cover art for her, you know, like a cover for a book of this whole series compiled. That kind of thing. But I’m so amazed by your willingness to bring attention to this. For that, you’re a hero to me. ???????
JY: Thank you for your kind words, Rina. (To the real heroes of the world: I am sorry I have led this poor person astray.)
Yeah, this is scarily accurate. I could remember when I was going stuff that was very much similar to this that I would spend a few hours during car rides imagining it crashing and me running out and far away. I spent so long dreaming of ways I could escape and things around me would fall apart, it’s heart breaking seeing it in Clarissa here.
I think a lot of us have been Clarissa at some point.
I cant tell you this enough but the way you write Clarissa is nothing short of amazing. I’m fascinated with the amount of depth you’ve given the characters you have here in the story and hope to see this flourish and grow to it’s end, whatever that may be.
Wow! I binged this whole comic at 1 am, after stumbling across the “Stuffed Animal” animated short. You deserve more recognition, the way you portray such a complex and controversial topic with such clarity is nothing short of brilliant! I absolutely love your artstyle, your other work is great too! I guess I’m a fan now, keep it up!
Haw haw! Ya got that creepy “perfect ’50s family” thing dow to a T !
Finally, a ReCaptacha challenge!
We all love WB but I do not see any Clarissa in your store. Please email me if you do release a book on her.
Clarissa is… so important to me. Please continue.
Ok, I got to the end and agree with Papi – please continue! Does the other girl invite her into her force field?!
JY: When PEEK arrives in December, all will be revealed!
I don’t understand… This was all originally written in 2000/2001? And you STILL haven’t finished it?! You can’t do this, man. I don’t care if this thing ends depressingly or with sweet justice or with whatever, but you gotta end it man!

JY: Visit my sex dungeon and I’ll explain it to you.
Heh heh.
But seriously, do you derive sexual pleasure or enjoyment out of a little girl’s suffering?
JY: Don’t make me have to send my alarmingly tall manservant Mr. Hushabye to your door.
You’re utterly mad, you know that?

guh. clarissa.
Halfway trough ’18, and still people come to discover your comic. Is it still purchasable?
JY: Oh my yes! Search my store for Deep Fried and Peek!
2019 and I’m still eagerly awaiting the return of the most depressing and genius comic of all time, Clarissa!

JY: Thanks!
God i found this through quora and it resonated with me so hard. I had no idea there was new updates!
