Hate to give this schmuck of a man anykind of defense, but maybe…at least on some level deep down…Clarissa’s old man does perhaps have a bit of humanity in him.
Not saying that doesn’t still make him a manipulative, abusive, disgusting, low life predator. But maybe, some part of him at least does desire to be a good father deep down, but he’s too messed up to truly get himself together to mend his family or be anything else but a source of childhood trauma for his daughter.
Bottom line, maaybe…just maybe, Clarissa’s dad is alittle bit of a tragic villain. Though I’m not holding my breath.
@Fingal…my brother in Christ, you are giving papa rapist too much credit. Like two pages ago, he revealed that he didn’t even know that Clarissa had a peanut allergy. Peanut allergies are potentially life-threatening; if this dude cared about his kid in any case, he wouldn’t rape her, first of all- but that detail of the peanut butter pretty much rang home that he doesn’t actually give a shit about her. He cares about his status as a provider and a father. He only cares about diffusing any further discord from “the problem child” so that his social capital isn’t threatened. Also I’m really high and fired up that these comics have an ending at all so excuse my passionate response to your take! I’m happy somebody else is still reading them all these years later
@BigdickSmalls I one hundred percent agree with your take about how he only cares about his status. If, deep down, he cared he’d consider his daughter even a tiny bit. The allergy thing I can let slide though, even my more caring and present parents didn’t know my seasonal allergies for a long while.
But, I mean. To an extent there probably is some semblance of good in the man. I believe even human monsters are still human. To have humanity does not equate to having goodness. Cuz that logic pushes the notion that humans are not naturally capable of having the capacity to be evil. Which, history has proven to be false. Even good people can act like monsters, but it’s because they aren’t that it’s all the more tragic and disgusting. Cuz they have the potential to be better, but consistently choose to do worse.
