Pop *does* eat his spinach, doesn’t he? (Complete with steam from the corncob pipe… it’s little touches like that which make this such a great read. Well, that and the art. Well, that and the violence…)
@Alexander: No, no, Segar’s strip definitely showed Popeye lovin’ that spinach. I recall one strip, where Popeye was to christen a new ship (the “Spinach Queen”) with a bottle of spinach juice instead of champagne; of course, having eaten the spinach used to make the juice, he swung a little too hard and sank the ship. Then he dove into the water and carried the boat back out.
1) can someone please explain the jammin at the frim fram spell Hilda cast (and tried to cast earlier)? Does it have a reference to the broomhilda comic, or some other comic?
Jorpho – what do you mean it is a techno reference. Can you find a youtube link so I can listen to it please?
2) Lonnie – absolutely. I want a Pops t-shirt also, more than Calvin and Hobbes.
@??? – “Jammin in the Frim Fram” was used in the actual Wizard of Id strip and had been referenced by Jason waaaaaaaaaay back in the second chapter.
@TheBruce – I know that once Fleicher introduced spinach into the animated cartoons, Segar did incorporate the leafy green vegetable into the strip. My point was that it didn’t ORIGINATE in the strip…
Alexander – yes, I see that the Wizard of Id also used the “jammin at the frimfram” is his spell.
What I am asking is, what reference to sunday comics is this? Jason pretty much does everything with a reference, so am curious what the reference is outside of Weapon Brown. I cannot figure it out.
Came across Weapon Brown yesterday and I’m already done with the archive. Diggin’ it, big time! And even cooler to see it’s done by a fellow UB alum! Keep up the great work, man!
Is it wrong that I actually feel sorry for the spook? It in and of itself is not malevolent, just what the Wizard made it to search out Chuck…when it says “Gawoo?” it looked sad like it knew it was about to be erased…I dunno, maybe the only killing here I actually have a kind of moral stand on….I know it’s dumb, but I figured I’d just put it out there 🙂
Re: The “frim fram” spell. In the “Wizard of Id” the spell is ‘jammin at da frim fram, frippen in da krotz’ Hilda is inverting the last bit of the spell to negate it afaik, ymmv.

Captcha is Weird Today is my anniversary and I get this “Mercer Marriage”
My recollection is that Popeye’s spinach fetish was strictly a product of the Max Fleicher cartoons and not from E.C. Segar’s strip…
Screw the Calv1n shirt! I wants a Pops shirt!
Going on a trip? Captcha = ventured Manhattan

Gawooo? I know I’ve heard that before, I just can’t remember where!
Captcha: Lipcovering anticipation
This is a real long shot, but could “Gawoo” be a reference to King Aroo, and is he the real leader of this Anti-Syndicate?

These magic words are worthy of techno music lyrics. Surely Mssrs. Parker and Hart couldn’t have come up with them?
Question and two comments.

???: The “jammin at the frim fram” spell is from Wizard of Id, and is referenced in comics from February. Go read ’em!
Awesome page today Jason. Magic and punching, all in one action packed Christmas present!
Makes you wonder if Pops is still a vegetarian in the post-apocalyptic wasteland. And I WILL buy a shirt of him if you make them. Scout’s honor 🙂
Hilda went from being a strange little witch to full-blown badass in the fourth panel!

I am continuously blown away by the art and dialog. I was wondering like Annie if I was going crazy because I was starting to understand Hilda too.

More boobies plz. kthxbye. :)~~~
I also support a Pops shirt as well, but in a specially posed manner, though isolating him from frame one would be fine too, with the word bubble…

Recaptcha: business Mucks
Alexander – oh, understood. The *real* wizard of id comic. I thought you meant the wizard of id in the weapon brown comic.
Thanks for clarifying.
